Smuggling gold into India from many countries is not a new phenomenon, but most of the gold is illegally imported into this country from Dubai and Singapore due to the difference in prices for this metal, the Economic Times reported citing an unnamed source in the Office of Control Collection of taxes (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, DRI) of India.
Recently, DRI has seized several kilograms of gold in southern India. Smugglers or couriers pretend to be ordinary citizens to avoid inspection, the source said.
"Dubai and Singapore are the main centers of gold supplies, and most travelers come to southern India on planes, while most of the Sri Lankan gold is imported by sea," he added.
The growth of gold smuggling was mainly due to the increase in import duties and restrictions on gold purchases, which made the illegal method of obtaining precious metal attractive for buyers. "The increase in duties on imports of gold to 10% through legal channels of supply and restrictions on purchases of gold made gold smuggling an attractive alternative, which is why its growth occurred," the source said.
The difference in exchange rates and in import duties in different countries makes gold one of the favorite precious metals for smuggling.
