As part of its "African initiative" KP Chair from the UAE Ahmed Bin Sulayem (Ahmed Bin Sulayem), met with the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama (John Dramani Mahama) after the second Forum on precious metals Africa - Dubai (Africa Dubai Precious Metals Forum), which took place Accra, reports IDEX Online. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues related to the Kimberley Process activities, and report on the results of mid-term activities of the Chairman of the KP.
Ghana is a member of the CP, and the president said during the discussion of his country's commitment to comply with all the mandates and operational criteria of the KP. Relatively small compared to other mining sectors, diamond industry retains its significance, though its share and account for less than 5% of Ghana's GDP income from the sale of minerals.
Ghana takes 11 th place on the diamond reserves in the world and is the 14th largest producer of them in Africa.
Mineral exports from Ghana in the first quarter of 2016 was $ 2.515 billion, compared with $ 2.558 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015.
Dramani Mahama emphasized recent changes in legislation, including a law on repatriation, according to which 85% of revenues from exports of raw materials back into the country.
All export transactions, including diamonds, are registered and feature reports the Bank of Ghana.
The President also referred to the further proposed changes in the legislation to be included in the license for production and sale of items which could force the company to participate in the recovery program environment, such as reforestation, etc.
The aim of "African Initiative" is the practical presence in the diamond-producing countries in order to help facilitate the implementation of the mandates of the CP and help Africa to be heard.
