Synthetic diamonds for a decade nourish the jewelry market, but it is impossible to give an exact quantitative proportion. According to various estimates, it ranges from several thousand to almost three billion carats, the French newspaper Le Monde reported.
"The lack of reliable statistics is one of the biggest shortcomings of the diamond industry," - cites the publication of the words of Rob Bates, editor of the online online magazine JCK Online.
According to one of the few official estimates prepared by the Gem and Jewelery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the annual production of synthetic diamonds is about 350 thousand.
Carats per year (against 150 million carats of gross mining of natural diamonds), which in value terms varies between $ 45 million and $ 135 million. "Most manufacturers are private companies, and some demonstrate greater secrecy." In addition, newcomers are emerging, especially in Russia and China, "notes Bates.
